Someone asked this morning what my first real estate sale was. That’s easy to remember. It was a home with a baby buried in the back yard, viewable from the kitchen window. Yep. You read that right.

My first listing was early in 2004. I had heard that a couple living in Beech Glen were considering selling their home, so I went and knocked on their door. The next thing I knew, I had my first listing. It was a beautiful log-style home with hardwood floors and lovely views of the countryside. It also had a premature baby buried in the garden area, where they could see her from the kitchen window. The family had multiple children, and the mother would tell you that these things happen. I checked with the state, and they told me that this was legal. I did disclose this information to potential buyers and we found a buyer within 4 days. The new owners were ok with the gravesite and even felt a bit sentimental about it.

I am happy to say in the 21 years since then, I have not had another property with a gravesite in the backyard, although many homes were next to cemeteries. I always point out that they make good neighbors as they are generally quiet and won’t develop the property. Always a bright side, right?
